Rhema and Logos: There Is No Difference!!!

The Word of Faith preachers keep telling us that there is a special difference between the words Logos and Rhema.

According to Word of Faith theology:

  • Rhema means “spoken word”, and Logos means “written word” or Jesus Himself
  • Rhema means “particular word” and Logos means general word
  • Rhema is subjective and Logos is objective
  • Rhema is specific word and Logos is generic word or universal word
  • Rhema is contemporary and Logos is eternal.
  • Rhema is the “now” word and Logos is the Bible itself
  • Rhema is a revelatory word and Logos is the written word
  • Rhema is the quickened word and Logos is the written word
  • Rhema word contains power and Logos word is only black letters in white paper

These claims are absolutely contrary to the scriptures.  In the Septuagint (Greek Old Testament) and in the Greek New Testament Rhema and Logos are used interchangeably.  They are used synonymously and there is no difference between Logos and Rhema at all.

Kenneth Hagin Sr. founded “Rhema Bible Training Center” a.k.a “Rhema Bible Twisting Center” based upon this false assumption!

Let me give one example related to a verse which is commonly used in the Charismatic circles:

1 Corinthians 12:8 Greek Study Bible (Apostolic / Interlinear)

ᾧ μὲν γὰρ διὰ τοῦ πνεύματος δίδοται λόγος σοφίας, ἄλλῳ δὲ λόγος γνώσεως κατὰ τὸ αὐτὸ πνεῦμα,

For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit;

Word of Knowledge and Word of Wisdom are specific messages from the Holy Spirit for a particular situation. They are supernatural and inspired. Word of Knowledge is informative and Word of Wisdom is directive.

Ignorant followers of Kenneth Hagin would assume that Paul had used Rhema to in 1 Corinthians 12:8 but to their surprise it is LOGOS.

Here is another example from the Gospels:

Matthew 26:75 And Peter remembered the word (Strong’s # 4487 – rhema) of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the **** crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.

Mark 14:72 And Peter called to mind the word (4487- rhema) that Jesus said unto him, Before the **** crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice.

Luke 22:61 And Peter remembered the word (Strong’s # 3056 – logos) of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the **** crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.

Neither Septuagint translators nor NT writers distinguished between Rhema and Logos but Kenneth Hagin got a special revelation (he probably borrowed it from E.W. Kenyon) and established this as his flagship doctrine. Therefore foundation of WoF itself is built on a lie.

And here is yet another.

Ephesians 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word (4487 – rhema) of God:

Hebrews 4:12 For the word (3056 – logos) of God [is] quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and [is] a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Ephesians 6:17 and Hebrews 4:12 both describe the word of God as a sword, but Ephesians uses the Greek word “rhema” for the “word” of God, while Hebrews uses the Greek word “logos” for the “word” of God. Should we assume that there are two different “swords” of God’s word, one that is a rhema word and one that is a logos word? No, the obvious answer is that it’s the same sword being described in both cases and that the words “rhema” and “logos” are not distinct enough to justify creating two different categories of the word of God.

If Hagin Sr. had lied about this fundamental truth how can we trust him with his other (alleged) revelations?
